Site Notice

Growl (http://growl.info/) - useful notifications that you control:
Growl is a notifications system. When something happens in one of your applications, that app can tell Growl, which will then turn around and tell you. Growl offers you complete control over which notifications are shown and how they are displayed (defined by styles). You will not receive any notifications that you do not want, because you can easily turn notifications (specific ones or all of them) off. The advantage of this is that you can configure how Growl tells you when things happen.

Growl support is available for many applications: e.g. Safari, Mail, Adium, iTunes, Skype, ...

Use Growl in your application: Growl can easily be used in your own application. Bindings are available for many languages: e.g. Cocoa, AppleScript, Java, Perl, Python, ... and last but least you can send a notification from a batch file.

10-foot graphical user interface:
A 10-foot user interface is a software GUI (graphical user interface) designed for display on a large television or similar sized screen. "10 foot" refers to the fact that the GUI's elements — i.e. menus, buttons, text fonts, and so on — are theoretically large enough to read easily at a distance of 10 feet (3 m) from a large-screen television. To avoid distractions and to be more clear, 10 foot UIs also tend to be very simple.

Minimalistic 10-foot style for Growl:
Example screenshot  (a notification from iTunes) taken from a 1920 * 1080 (television) display (downscaled).

The 10-foot style divides a notification into 4 areas:
- the (application) icon (128 * 128 pixel)
- the (notification) title (Helvetica 62 pixel, bold)
- a gray dividing line
- the (notification) message (Helvetica 36 pixel, bold)

Further properties are controlled on the Growl settings page for this style:

- tested on OS x 10.6.6 with Growl 1.2.1

Just doubleclick your new style / plugin and Growl will copy it to ~/Library/Application Support/Growl/Plugins.
Select your style / plugin in the display tab and click on the preview button to see your new style in action.
